Silver leafed coffee table

 So I’m a little obsessed about silver leafing right now.  Its amazing!!  I have also dabbled in gold leaf as well.  It’s such a fun way to make over rusty old things.  This is the base of my coffee table in the living room.  Its huge and it takes up  a lot of space.  I really wanted it to be a statement piece.

 The base was all ready metal but it was so rusty in places, and had a dull dingy look to it.  I wanted it a bit more glam.

so I started off by painting the adhesion glue all over the base. I had to let it sit for an hour before i could start silver leafing.  then the fun began.

 as you can see i laied out each sheet on the glue then using a makeup brush i burnished it to make it shinny.  look how different it looks.  I just love the fresh new look it gave to the base.  I’m not going to lie this stuff is messy and it gets every where. So make sure you have a vacuum near by and a patient husband. 

 next for the top I sanded off all the yellow/orange polyurethane which took for ever, until my hubby offered up to use the belt sander (hello 10 min later.)

originally I wanted the top to be gray but it just wouldn’t get dark enough.  So i broke down and used some Ebony that I had  in the garage, and well I loved it!  
after it was all dried and sealed I took it in the house to spiff it up even more.I wanted to add racing stripes (I love strips)  so I taped off the stripes painted glue waited and hour and then added the leafing. I decided to to the edges around the wood, and I’m so glad I did it looks so polished.

 I wanted to add a vintage number and and something Parisian but then i thought why don’t I personalize it?  so I stenciled our last name and the date we go married.  Its was so fun to pull out the wedding  photos when my kids asked about the date.  LOL

 So now its done it looks amazing and it was so easy.  I could have gotten the silver leather ottoman from Z gallery for 900$  but instead I made over an old GAP table (yes truly from the GAP) and now I have a piece nobody has.  I love it when things I own are original and unique, it make your house yours and not a show room from……. Well you know what i mean.  I’m in love love love with my new table!
