How to paint your bathroom tile

I knew when we moved in that this house, had a lot of things I wanted to change.  Our master bath has got to go!! (even our arctitect said it was one of the weirdest/ugliest master baths he had seen) and he’s seen a lot! The master bath  however its way way far down on the list.  So I took matters into my own hands and decided to paint the tile.  It wasn’t too hard to find the tile paint I needed, there are a ton if you look it up on line.  I decided on zinsser primer and then crossed my fingers it would work.

The first step is to clean the tile! and I mean clean!!  get out the rubber gloves and really scrub it up. Don’t leave any soap build up or scum anywhere.  Mine was pretty easy to clean because it is a surface that doesn’t get too wet.  I don’t think I would ever try this for a shower or counter top.  And I would never  do this if I didn’t know I was ripping this whole thing out in a year or two.

After you have cleaned your little heart out then its time to paint.  They suggest using a foam roller which is exactly what you want if you don’t want any lines in the finished produce.   I wanted my tile to look like the beautiful linen tile I have for my laundry room floor, so I chose to paint with a very expensive brush.  I had to put on two coats of the primer mainly because I was covering black.  Then I picked the color of paint I wanted.  a beautiful creamy white and painted 3 more coats. I did a wet sand in between the coats on drip mark or a stray pieces of lint, and I was done. 
 But wait there is the final step.  As some of you might not know paint needs time to cure.  It gets harder and harder as days go by.  So for about a week or two don’t get it too wet and don’t set any cute glass jars or deco on the surface.  this is just to ensure that it wont chip or peel.

I think it turned out great, its not a perfect fix but for now a few dollars of paint and a few hours of time have made the biggest difference in my bathroom.  Its so much lighter and brighter.  I can’t wait to paint the walls a soft sea foam green in a few weeks.  Then I think I will be able to live with it for a year or so and dream about when I can get my free standing soaker tub, double vanity, quarts counters………..
