My Taylor loves sock monkeys, he has like 10 of them. He has been collecting them for a while so when I saw this cute blog post on DIY sock monkeys I thought I could probably do that. It took a segment on Studio 5 to get me to try it. Not sure I would have ever tried it other wise. LOL
I have to say that the best blog for the step by step instruction is www.craftpassion.com wow they did a great job of explaining every detail. I couldn’t have done it without all their fabulous photos. I’m not the best sewer so I needed a step by step!! check them out if you need help making this little guy.
Socks are cheep and this craft only cost 2$ per sock monkey compared to the 10-20$ you would pay in the store. however this takes a lot of time. So if you need a fast gift this is not the project for you. If you need something to do while you are watching your 10 year old practice football for 2 hours every night then read on! And a huge plus is that when all the parts are sewn up by the machine you can pop the pieces in your bag to sew on the road!!!
I found that sewing the socks was the easiest part. turning them inside out wasn’t as hard as I thought either. however the hand sewing of the arms, tail and face about drove me crazy. I thought that would be the easiest part. I had the arms to high, ummm right on the head! ha ha the ears were backwards the mouth not stuffed enough. So the take away is pin every thing on first and mark it with a fabric pen. This project is for the patient careful crafter, I was in too big of a hurry.
Trying to find two matching buttons was a chore LOL but I did it and the believe it or not I sewed that little mouth on my sock monkey!
Pin pin pin is all I have to say. I give this Pintrest sock monkey project a FAIL if you need a fast cute easy craft, and a PASS if you need something to keep you busy while you are camping. I think I had more fun adding the accessories to these little guys, like birthday hats and glasses. You will have to wait to see those later.
My little gift to you is my mini banner printable (I do have the birthday monkey holding this during the studio 5 segment). click HERE for the printable
p.s. I have also used this to make mini banners to glue to dowels and use as cake toppers. Hello that was its original purpose.
