IKEA hack, Anthropology gold lace plate

Last Thanks giving I made over my darling glass  plates form Ikea.  These plates are 1.99 and when I was finished with them they looked almost like the gold lace plate I fell in love with from Anthropology.   Let me show you how I turned this IKEA hack for Anthropology gold lace plates into a darling appetizer plate I used for Thanksgiving, Valentines and for a darling wedding shower.

I used the Frodig style plates from IKEA they are 1.99$ and are the perfect size for the gold lace appetizers and desserts plates.  The plates come with a great pattern that is molded into the plate to look like the doilies that are embossed on the gold lace plate from Anthropology.  With a little paint I transformed these inexpensive IKEA plates into darling knock offs of a 20$ palate for a couple of dollars.

This first style was the easiest.  I just painted the plate with Porcelaine gold glass paint and followed the directions for baking the plate in the oven. Pretty simple just use a foam brush and paint as many coats as  want to achieve the look you are after. If you want a dark gold opaque finish then you might want to use 3-4 coats.  I used two and loved the look! This plate was suppose to be dishwasher safe but it did scratch in places so I started washing them by hand and they have kept their beautiful gold finish.  I don’t use these every day because I do want to keep them for other occasions.

This next plate was made with mod podge and glitter.  This one is NOT dishwasher safe and started peeling off after about 10 uses. I did however find a Mod Podge that said it was dishwasher safe and I would love to know if this is really the case.  LOL I would hand wash this style just to be safe, and know that this is a less permanent solution.  I started by painting the Mod Podge onto the plate where i wanted the glitter to stick.

I then sprinkled ultra fine glitter from the Martha Stewart collection on top of the Mod Podge.  After this was dry ( about an hour)  I dabbed on another coat of Mod Podge to seal the glitter.   I loved this look the best it was glittery and festive, this look lasted through all the holiday dinners and a wedding shower just fine.  When I started using them for my breakfast toast well…. that’s when the gold sparkle started peeling off.  Keep this method in mind when you want a less permanent change to your dishes, a great idea for parties and showers.  And please if you have used the dishwasher safe Mod Podge please let me know I’m dying to try it!

If you really would like your IKEA plates to look like the gold lace plates from anthropology. I suggest you mod Podge a gold doily to the bottom of the plate. I would get the plain non molded plate from IKEA for .99 cents, I think the doily would adhere better to the bottom of the plate that way.  you can see HERE how I did this for a Christmas cookie plate.   I didn’t do this with my holiday plates because I was looking for a more permanent solution.  So if your board this summer get a jump start on your Holiday table or if you have a fancy wedding dinner or shower to host then these little plates will get rave reviews!
