I’m so excited to share with you my tips, tricks, and secrets on how I organize and keep my systems in place. How did you do last week with the junk drawer? This week I’ll teach you how to get under the sink organization. There is nothing like having a professional organizer come to your home with bins and ideas to help you get organized, but if you don’t have the means to have a professional over then you can count on me to teach you ‘my ways’. Sometimes getting started on organizing your house seem very overwhelming. So for next few Mondays, this year I will walk you through some of the most frustrating places in your house and teach you how you should be organizing these small spaces. Then you will be able to see how easy it is and want to tackle the bigger projects.
To get this under sink organization you have to know what’s well…. under your sinks. It seems like under sinks are a virtual black hole. So as always the first step is to take it all out! And then take stock of what you had in the very back, how long have you had that? do you need it? did you know you had it? If you answer any of these questions in a negative response you know what I’m going to say to you right?
This is where you just need to put on your big girl pants and get rid of stuff you are not going to use. If you have it because you bought it and you hate the smell get rid of it. If you have it because you think you might use it one day and its been under your sink for over a year get rid of it! If you have 3 or 4 of the same thing but you love it then find a place to back stock some of your product. Find a designated space for back stock, it might be under the sink or maybe in your linen closet, pantry or basement. Ask yourself what do you need under the sink? My sink as you can see is the smallest thing in the world because I have my entire water purifier under the sink so I have to be very selective on what I keep.
You are in this space everyday girls, every day!! Don’t you want to open up the cupboard and get what you need? Make it functional and pretty and clean and tidy, don’t keep any extra stuff just to keep it!
This space gets supper dirty which I find ironic seeing that it houses my cleaning supplies. We had a leaky pipe for a few days once and it warped a bit of the MDF cabinet, there are spills and drips from the pop cans that get thrown in the recycling. I wanted to put contact paper down to help with clean up but never do because I don’t want to stick it to the cabinet. I found this amazing company ExactMats and just about threw a party I was so excited. Their product is Phthalate free clear vinyl that looks like glass!!!! I was amazed I thought it was glass. And the best part, everything they do is 100% custom. you heard me, custom, in this day and age of one size fits all this company is a true lover of customer service and attention.
So when ExactMats asked if I wanted to try out their matt for under my sink I jumped a the chance to see how I would like it. I mean how could I not try a matt that is a perfect fit, heavy duty, and last forever? My mind is thinking about lining my pantry, my drawers, putting this stuff under my plates, gosh I’d make one to put over my coffee table if my hubby would let me. LOL
if you have a system in place this organizing challenge probably took you 15 min. to weed out the clutter. If you didn’t have a system in place but are wanting one measure your space, find your bins and get started. It might take you a bit longer to play around with how you will fit it all in. I already had a system as you can see but wanted a better one because of how little space I had. I got these cool ‘new to me’ bins from the container store that are super tall and stackable. I was so sick of knocking over my stuff or grabbing my bin and having things tip. I wanted a bin that had module dividers inside and were tall enough to hold my cleaners and trash bags. I LOVE IT!!!
Ask yourself what do you really need, extra bags, cleaning supplies for the kitchen, recycle bin, dishwasher tabs, sponges, rags, paper towels? What am I missing? You might have a few different things but really that’s all you need. Make sure when you are putting away the things you keep only what you are using and find other places for you over stock. This is prime space and you are in this cupboard every day people make it pretty and nice. don’t surround yourself with just ok your space should be fabulous functional and fun. After doing this 15 min under the sink organization challenge I realized I want a bar for my dishtowels and a little caddy for my wet sponges. That the fun part of organizing you don’t need to do it all you just need to start and then you can perfect it later if you need too.
