Spring is in the air! Unless you are in Utah today then it just snowed?!?!? Hello, it’s April 17 for heaven sakes. lOL ok will usually in the spring the sun is out, trees are blossoming, birds are singing, what a wonderful thing! I’m so ready for some warmth. Granted, those seasonal allergies are also in full swing, but hey it’s warm now or will be tomorrow, LOL. There’s nothing more I like to do when the sun starts shining again than get outside and enjoy the warm fresh air. The only way to enjoy the outside spring air, even more, is to bring the whole family! There are so many awesome outdoor activities in my lovely home state of Utah. Here are some of my favorite fun spring activities for you and your kids!
Yard games are an awesome weekend or after school go to! We have a few we like to play almost regularly. One is called Kubb (koob), a Viking chess game, we also enjoy yard Yahtzee, Giant Jenga, and pretty much anything competitive (boys will be boys LOL). There are countless, fun yard games for you and your family to play! Find what you and your kids like best! And if you feel like trying out some of our games, here are some tutorials, rules and DIY tutorials so you can make them yourself. Kubb. Yard Yahtzee. Giant Jenga. Get out there and have some fun!
April showers bring May flowers and lots of windy days… That’s how that goes right? Okay, I know that’s not it, but it should be! One thing I know to be a sure thing is springtime is windy. Nature’s way of spreading flower and dandelion seeds or something like that. Whatever the reason, let’s roll with it! Get out there and fly some kites! Not only can it be a wonderful family activity, with a walk to your favorite near-by park it’s also great exercise.
When I was a kid, I always knew it was spring when my mom would pull out all the gardening tools and get all of us kids outside to plant our garden. We would all get out there together, pull the weeds (not my favorite part), till and fertilize the soil, and plant all of the flowers together. I loved getting to help choose which flowers went where in the garden, even if my mom guided me to where she knew they would look best. It was one thing I always got excited about, even if I complained a little while pulling the weeds, which somehow always turned into a contest about which sibling pulled the most (very sneaky mom LOL), and whether we wore gloves or collected the worms barehanded, we had a fun family Saturday planting each spring. Also, a great way to spend the upcoming Earth Day with your kiddos! If you’re looking for something a little different plant some veggies and enjoy them later! I’m dreaming of my tomatoes and balsamic!!
Living so close to the Rocky Mountains, there are so many wonderful hiking trails and canyons I’ve grown up trekking. Now that I have kids of my own, I love that I have the opportunity to show them the beauty that is right outside our door! Hiking is a wonderful family pastime, and even more so in the spring! You beat the summer heat by a few months, and at most you’ll need a light jacket! Sometimes Tanner is not a willing participant but when we hike it’s more about being together than going very far. Find a trail near you and set out on this adventure! For some extra added fun find a trail near a Geocache and set off on a little scavenger hunt while you’re out in the great outdoors!
I absolutely LOVE the rain. I love how it sounds, smells, looks, basically everything about it, and we know there is no shortage of storms in the spring. Those April showers don’t mean you need to stay inside, grab a jacket and some boots and go play in that rain! Your kids will absolutely love jumping in those puddles, and let’s be honest, it’s still fun for us adults too! Run around, jump up and down, have a dance contest, let your imagination run wild! And if you’re not a fan of getting soaked in the rain, grab a blanket and maybe some cocoa in your favorite mug and sit outside on your porch with your kids and watch the rain and listen to the thunder. I always loved sitting in my living room with my dad and watching the lightning storms over the great salt lake when I was a kid. It’s something I still do every chance I get! Go enjoy nature and create some memories with your families because the most important thing is spending time with those little guys. someday soon they will be off in the big wide world with babies of their own and you will have to borrow those little yummies (grandkids) for the day to continue your springtime traditions!
