How to Overdye an old rug using spray Tint it from Design Masters. 

I have been dying to try my hand at the overdye prosses on an old rug I had.  ( sorry no pun intended) I seized my chance when I was asked to do a studio 5  segment on spray dye.  What is this magical spray dye I asked?  It’s a dye that is sheer in color and transparent so that anything you spray will have a tint without being covered up like spray paint would do its called tint it. I was intrigued and wanted to play with this new craft medium.   Design Master was kind enough to send me a rainbow collection of their tint it colors, and I was soon at work trying to see how this spray dye would react with my rug.

The ugly old rug I had in my storage room that kept my bare feet warm when I had to venture inside was begging to be taken out and treated to a facelift.  So I vacuumed it up and took the rug outside to my garage to use my cans of tint it sprays.  I used two colors the tint it Raspberry and Strawberry and mixed them as I sprayed.  The more I sprayed the tint it darker the colors got. It was so exciting to see the transformation of the rug.  I wish I had used the turquoise but I had one can of that color and this project seemed to need at least two cans if not more.

I sprayed and mixed and blended the colors then sprayed some more to cover the entire rug.  When I was finished it was such a transformation!  I liked the color and was sad that I only had this one weird sized rug to play around with.  I let this rug dry for two days before I attempted to walk over and over it in white socks to see if the tint it color would bleed onto my socks.  Not a trace of tint it dyes was to be found on my white socks. That seemed encouraging so now as a trial I’m keeping it by my back door where I let the dog out at least 5 times a day to see how it’s going to wear.  I might have to post a retraction but so far so good,  just waiting for it to snow again so I can test the durability of the rug when It gets wet.

I’m excited to see what will become of my little over-dye rug, and if any more rugs in this house will be transformed using this tint it sprays or will I try the old fashion way of messy rit dye?  We will have to wait for summer for that to happen.  So, for now, I’ll be grateful to Design Master for sending me some spray dye to play with and I’ll be using this on lots of projects to come so stay tuned!
